Part 1: How To Correctly Use Emojis

Emojis. (All great posts start with a one-word opener, by the way.) How do you use an emoji in a sentence and be grammatically correct?? No one knows the answer. Personally, this has bugged me for a long, long time. I also use way too many emojis in texts, emails, etc, too. So it would be really helpful to have a grammar book that explains how to correctly use emojis, wouldn’t it?  So that’s what I’m going to do. Well, I’m not going to write a book (🙄), I’m going to try to figure out what should be the right way to use them, without having to write a book.

So, there are a few ways I have seen people use them. One is: “That’s so funny. 😂” Basically, here the texter put it after the period. To me this doesn’t make sense, and it simply bugs me. Because wouldn’t the emoji be apart of the sentence? The mistake here is the texter is ending the sentence that should have the emoji in it, and starting a new sentence with a random emoji in it. If you use emojis this way, I’m sorry. I don’t mean to be offensive, but you’re using it totally, and absolutely, wrong.

The second way I’ve seen people use it is this: “No, you’re an idiot😼.” This also doesn’t seem correct, although it doesn’t bug me as much as the first example. In this example the texter seems to think that the emoji is part of the word. Sometimes, people will put a space between the emoji following the word, which seems slightly more correct.

Finally, I think I saved the best for last. The following example is what I personally use. A friend of mine did it like this originally, and whenever I put an emoji in a sentence differently, I always felt I was doing it wrong. So eventually I started doing this: “Yep, I’m stupid 😐 Don’t rub it in.” I don’t know about you, but to me this feels correct. What you are seeing in this example is the emoji, with a space on both sides, in between both of those sentences. It feels clean, proper, comfortable, and not forced.

Food for thought.

Let me know in the comments how you use emojis! (Example 1,2, or 3.) Also… please like this post… and share it if you really like it (you’ll be my new best friend if you do). I need to get more likes… it’s depressing only getting a few.
